Waste to Wealth’: Indore Municipal Corporation Begins Construction on Textile Recycling Plant

INDORE, India — In its ongoing push for innovative civic solutions, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has broken ground on a new facility designed to tackle the city’s growing textile waste problem.
Construction has commenced on a Waste Cloth Processing Plant located at the Devguradia trenching ground. The initiative aims to convert discarded garments into usable yarn, reinforcing Indore’s reputation as a leader in urban cleanliness and sustainable waste management practices.
Here is the investigative breakdown of the project’s scope, cost, and operational model.
The Project: Turning Rags into Riches
The proposal for the dedicated cloth processing plant emerged from a practical challenge: the accumulation of large quantities of unusable clothes collected at the city’s zone-wise Three-R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Collection Centres and the ‘Neki ki Deewar’ (Wall of Kindness) initiatives.
The Goal: The primary objective is the scientific disposal and repurposing of this textile waste. Instead of ending up in landfills, unusable garments will be processed to produce yarn, which can then be reused in various industries.
The Model: The project is being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Total Cost: Rs 2 crore estimated for construction.
IMC’s Role: The corporation is providing the land at Devguradia, electricity connection, and necessary civil work.
Revenue Generation: In return for its investment and assets, the IMC is projected to receive a monthly revenue of Rs 1.75 lakh from the private partner operating the facility.
The Context: Indore’s ‘Three-R’ Strategy
This new facility is a strategic addition to Indore’s broader commitment to the “Three-R” concept. The IMC already operates several successful PPP-model plants dedicated to waste management, including:
Bio-CNG/Methanisation Plant: For processing wet waste into energy.
Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs): For the segregation and processing of dry waste.
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that converting unusable clothes into yarn will propel Indore to the “next level of cleanliness” and strengthen its position as a national leader in “Waste to Wealth” initiatives.
